The series consists of controlled and major correspondence maintained by the Criteria and Standards Division of the Office of Radiation Programs. Included are copies of controlled and major correspondence signed by the the Assistant Administrator and Deputy Assistant Administrator for Air, Noise, and Radiation, the Director of the Office of Congressional Liaison, the Director of the Office of Radiation Programs, the Director of the Criteria and Standards Division, or branch chiefs and other personnel within the Criteria and Standards Division. Also included are a few copies of correspondence signed by the Administrator or the Deputy Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The bulk of the correspondence is with members of Congress and often encloses correspondence from individual constituents concerning radiation related environmental issues within their community. Also included is correspondence with other individuals as well as some internal EPA memorandums. Some of the topics include disposal of radioactive waste, the Health Physics Society, and uranium mining and milling.

William Doyle Ruckelshaus was born July 24, 1932, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was Deputy Attorney General of Indiana from 1960 through 1965, and a member of the Indiana House of Representatives and its majority leader from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon appointed him Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Civil Division for the Department of Justice.
